About Wolves

As a keystone species, the gray wolf plays an essential role in maintaining healthy, biologically diverse wild ecosystems.

Yet, wolves have faced centuries of persecution in the Unites States. Wolves and wolf pups were shot, trapped, poisoned, strangled, bludgeoned, dug from their dens, and tracked with dogs until only a few hundred persisted in the lower forty-eight states. The howls of these wilderness icons were silenced as wolves vanished across 99% of their ancestral lands,

It took a change in public attitudes and government policy to rescue America's gray wolves from the brink of extinction. But, the passage of anti-wolf laws over the past decade has turned the clock back. Trophy hunters armed with the latest technology and are turning wilderness areas — held in public trust for all of us — into killing fields. The very wolf populations our nation worked so hard to restore are again being destroyed.

Fortunately, people across America respect wolves' rightful place in nature. We are determined to change laws and stop the killing. The 06 Legacy welcomes you on a journey of learning and appreciation for the history, beauty, and majesty of wolves. Most of all, we hope that you will be with us in the fight to protect America's gray wolves.

Elections

Elections have a significant impact on the way government works. Winners' determine who makes decisions about wolves in the U.S. Congress and within each state. The leaders we elect will choose to either keep wolves safe or authorize trophy hunting. What can we do?

  • We need to vote! Less than 5% of the U.S. population are hunters. Yet, this small minority has created wolf policy for the majority of us.
  • We need to support those who fight for wolves! Congressional members from the Senate (21 US senators) and House (78 members) support emergency relisting to restore federal protections.
  • We need to change state wolf policy! Where wolves are delisted, state governments have control. Governors and state legislatures determine the fate of wolves.

Make your VOTE count for wolves! We are here to help with 06 Paws Up endorsements.
